From the 2012 dealer preview Following the January 2012 range previews at Hornby's headquarters, there are a few titbits of information to share. Star Wars The Star Wars themed "Start" set will be a racing set using "speeder bikes" on a camouflage-coloured track, whereas the Micro set will be a spacecraft chase game. The idea of the game being to knock your opponent's craft off the track (as they are too wide to pass each other - see photo opposite) - the craft will have lights, glow in the dark features and the track layout is designed to use the box lid as well, so quite a novel turn. My First Scalextric This is being redesigned with the option to use battery power to avoid trailing power cables for the little ones. The track is all still the same however. New items for 2012 Only the box or design artwork were available for most of the new releases, so very little in the way of physical new product to show at the time of the previews. James Bond Skyfall material was under a product embargo at the time of the previews. The full list of 2012 models is in the price list PDF above. All the images are as shown on the Scalextric preview web page linked above, or in the catalogue which can be ordered below. As soon as models approach their release dates we will put more details on the site. Delayed items from 2011 These are expected to arrive in January / February 2012. The Veyrons, a new Porsche RS Spyder, and the chrome Supercars set had examples on display and look quite attractive.

Other stuff Mindful of the Olympics approaching, we're considering a small venture into stocking the vehicular portion of the range of London 2012 (static) models being produced by Hornby, along with some of the interesting Airfix 1:32 scale classic car models now being produced. Register for updates via Twitter Except for the occasional highly-sought-after and due-very-soon items, we do not take pre-orders for products not yet released. This is because nowadays we have to take payment with order due to new card processing rules which require payments to go through secure third party processing, which means we don't see and can't store customers' payment card details. In the past we also found that dealing with cancelled pre-orders and issuing refunds months later, when customers change their minds, find them cheaper elsewhere or products are cancelled or don't meet their release dates, or customer card details have expired, just becomes a complete admin nightmare. And in any case, taking customers' money for products which don't even exist yet, doesn't seem right to us.

So we have an alternative solution, using Twitter! If you are interested in any of the items in the new range, just send an "expression of interest" email or message via the Contact Us link above. You don't need to commit to buying, or leave any card details. Just provide the catalogue numbers and names of the items that tickle your fancy and your Twitter name. We will use these messages to gauge what sort of quantities of stock to get in. You can do this both for new products and for regular items that have gone out of stock. Then, all you need to do is follow modelmotorracin on Twitter - the same day that new supplies come in, details are posted to Twitter. If you have sent your @twitter.com name, when we send a new stock tweet for something you are interested in, we can attach your @name to the tweet, so it appears as a Twitter "mention" for you (rather than just in the regular stream). Mentions can also be set to automatically beep/SMS your iPhone/iPad or Android phone/tablet via the official Twitter app. So if Joe wants a C7036 and Fred wants a C8515, when stock is in, a stock tweet like this would be sent by us: Restocks today of Scalextric C7036, C8515 @joebloggs @fredbloggs Joe Bloggs and Fred Bloggs will receive this as a mention and most everyone else who follows @modelmotorracin sees it as a regular tweet. Joe uses the Twitter app on his iPhone and thus receives this as an SMS on the train home from work. Fred sees it in his Tweetdeck app on his computer. So although we won't reserve items, Joe and Fred can get in first as soon as new products are physically here in stock, and have the best chance of getting one - they can place an order as soon as they are able, safe in the knowledge that stock is in place and can be sent out straight away. A nice side effect of this is the social networking aspect of sharing the Twitter details of slot car folk around Twitter, and giving you new people to follow, which can't be a bad thing. A tweet will also be sent when we have some news of changes to release plans, as well as any additional products that may pop up during the year. The list of @names in a tweet also gives you an idea of how many other people may be waiting for this news (and how quick you need to be) - but there would always be plenty available for those who pre-registered their interest via this method. This is a much better way of ensuring the really keen buyers get first pick of the stock, and makes use of the latest web technology to ensure nobody is committing money for items which could be months away from delivery.
